Question by Evan Palmer: GOLF SWING TIPS : swing practice?
I now feel that with a 9 iron I swing pretty well, and I feel that I am doing things correctly. How much will differ when I use my woods ? Should I strive to get the exact same mechanics as I have for my 9 iron ?

As you may know, there are many clubs in Golf bag, woods (3) and long irons (3,4) and middle iron (5,6,7) and short iron (8, 9, wedges) and putter.

Your question is most important and fundamental question that most of golfers need to have a comfortable understanding of it. Thanks for addressing this question.

One thing you need to know is that the ball position will be different depending on which club you are hitting with.

If you are putting ball in the middle of your stance for 9 iron, I am quite sure your handle will be ahead of ball and you will be hitting the ball with down-blow. Because of this the angle of club head will be de-lofted.

On the other hand, as you move club to longer such as wood, the ball position will be moving from center to left (assuming you are right hand), so that ball striking will be more like sweeping swing rather than down-blow swing.

This change of swing will requires a different mechanics. However, you will want to maintain the same grip and tempo for ball striking.

  1. same swing same position helps i think.

Top Secret: The best tip I can give is the hanging arm swing, controlled fully by good setup, grip balance, posture, stillness and a smooth and fluid core turn which involves everything from feet up, knees, hips, stomach, chest and shoulders all conneted passively working together to generate genuine power with great accuracy. As no amount of power is any good if you cant get back to where you started and most importantly being able to stop the momentum it produces in balanced manner at the finish. This way you dont have to think about it all day long either. You just wind the core up and let it all unwind again to the finish. Ofcourse firing it up at the driving range and few times in the backyard helps.

Its a truly beautiful thing to be able to play golf without having to worry where you are going to hit the ball because your arms hands club and body will be doing the same thing over and over. When your body rotates and your arms and hand just become infused into the weight of the club head the ball just struck hard clean and with more impulse and momentum. The trouble is you have to readjust your game a little as it wants to run away through the fairway on a dogleg, you’ll have to start choosing your clubs like a pro, so be careful. Keep it honest and smart and repeatable tempo around 75-85% your scores will drop fast. I use to club up because i knew i would be short, now its more consistant distance and shape i can trust.

Know your air ball shapes and what causes them. Most common the slices occurs with late open faces and throwing the club over the top. stop that by try to stay still over the ball producing the transfer of energy to inside feet positions, letting the arms and hands naturally SWING HANG lag behind the body at start and finish like a pro. Instead of throwing the club and ball you can slow it down a tad because you have just added 4-8 extra kgs to the equation when you start including the dead weight of your arms into your swing, not to mention the rest of the body moving from your core piviot. If you already know how to puttt get out of sand and chip, your laughing.

  2. I find it hard to go over in this kind of session as you can’t really follow all the moves. Have you ever thought of using golf recordings as a way of developing your skills? Being able to put golf tips into practice this way is a great alternative, it’s more hands-on!

  3. Evan, congratulations on swinging pretty well with a 9 iron. However, the same swing for your 9 iron will not be the same swing you use for your woods. To give you an illustration, your 9 iron would be a corvette and your driver a school bus. Both have different acceleration speeds.

Your 9 iron because it is shorter in length is like a corvette coming around a mountain curve vs a school bus (woods) coming around same mountain curve. Due to these different lengths you are going to have to adjust your timing and rhythm.

If you were to use the same swing for every club you will have to adjust your baseline of your feet. For example, Ben Hogan would setup with open stance for wedge shots but for driver he used a slightly closed stance.

Whichever route you choose I am sure you will figure it out that’s why Ben said “the secret is in the dirt.”
