If you are willing to work on your game and can make consistent contact with the ball, I’d keep you on my team. For high school girls, many golf coaches (unless you go to a school with an outstanding girls golf program) are just looking for girls who have some experience with the sport. I hate having to start from scratch. Don’t EXPECT to play varsity in the very first match but definitely show the coach that you WANT to.

  1. I coach middle school golf till i got ill Mostly at the beginning i tell them to get head down left arm straight

  2. spend some time reading some of the tips on golf at the golf channels web site..I think if you go to your Yahoo and find sports and then find golf, there are lots of tips to become a better golfer and best of all it is FREE..then you can just look and practice what is there, I think even Natalie Gilbus(sp) has some tips for ladies( girls )…give it a try, it might be all you need to be even more competitive on the course

  3. If you want to play better golf (including making the team) you had better take some lessons.. Lessons from a real pro not a friend. I guarantee that you will play better and you will make the team.. Also practice, practice, practice… I don’t mean go play a round of golf. I mean practice…. Good luck.. Grant from Pennsylvania

  4. for chipping use a 7or 9 iron, a pitching wedge or sand wedge. a 5 will work but a 7 or 9 will get under the ball more wich will put it ^ and send it further

  5. did you thought about taking lesson prior thinking about going out for the golf team at your school? you still have time to take a lesson and work on what the pro instructor show you. good luck

  6. I dropped 10 strokes off my game watching Golf Channel Academy (like 5 years ago). At some point you should get lessons, but if you make the team your coach will most likely work with you, so you might want to wait until after tryouts to see if you want long term lessons. A starter lesson or 1 day clinic would not be a bad idea though.

You can start practicing anything and everything they talk about on Golf Channel Academy right now. Go TiVO it so you get every episode!

  7. Well you are already on to something: Chipping is 90% of the game so spend an equivalent amount of practice time there. Too many people want to hit the bit, long, pretty drives but those are not what wins rounds.

Choose one club – your favorite short iron, say a nine and start with it. Start hitting full swings and noting the distances you get then take the same swing but only go back about 75% of the way then note your distance…all you want to do is learn to control the club/striking the ball and learn your distances.

Dave Pelz’s “Short Game Bible(?)” is a great book that is guaranteed to improve your short game. (And I am in no way, shape, or form affiliated with him or his book!)

Good Luck! And enjoy the game!

  8. I did 2 things to improve my short game. 1 I bought 2 cleveland wedges, a big help. 2 I quit opening my stance distance was always pretty good but my accuracy improved greatly when I squared everything up and quit opening up. Even on really short chips.

  9. lots of golf tips here in this discussion.

  10. Chipping? First off use a 7-iron,8-iron for chipping. It is more consistence. And will rarely go over the green. Always go the safe way never go risky unless you have too. Or you for sure you can get it. I would rather drive it 200-yards straight down the middle than 300-yards with a slice. If you are good at putting you should be good to go. Just try to keep the ball into play and hit it straight.

  11. Tempo is the most important thing. Do not swing too hard or too fast on any stroke.
