COMPETITION: Playoffs The Barclays live

Barclays golf headlines are around Tiger Woods  this morning. Yet the Barclays golf tournament has more than Woods involved, as the results will determine next week’s tournament field.
Now that the FedEx Cup playoffs have begun again, the PGA is hoping to have a thrilling race over the next month. After a year of golfers accumulating points, they now get to fight for their lives over the next four weeks. Although the Barclays golf tournament has Woods stealing the headlines today, he still needs to keep going if he wants to play next week.

Thanks to his late start this year, and his struggles when he came back, Woods is fairly low in the FedEx Cup point standings. He still made it into the top 125 and qualified his way in, but he needs to be among the top 100 after this weekend to stay alive.

If the Barclays golf results have Woods finish between 50th and 57th, he will get to participate in next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. Since he has started in first place, it bodes well for his chances to advance. Even if he slips off the leaderboard, he just needs to not get bogged down by bogeys and pars, and he will get another shot in Boston.

While Woods is fighting to make it out of week 1, the Barclays golf tournament has higher stakes for the FedEx Cup point standings leaders. Ernie Els comes into the playoffs with the lead, by 149 points, over Steve Stricker. Yet the third-place player may already be finished, after Jim Fuyrk was disqualified for oversleeping through his pro-am tee time.
